It's called Vignetting. In 25 words or less, it occurs because the lens does not let as much light fall on the film/sensor towards its edges as opposed to the centrem, for various reasons.

Of course, I created the Vignetting in this case :-)
In Photoshop, if you go to Filters -> Distort -> Lens Correction, you can play with a Vignetting setting in there, and change the distance in the vignetting starts (as in, distance the gradient begins at from the edge of the image), and it's intensity (how quickly it gets dark towards the edges of the image).
