Lenses, Lenses and More Lenses

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 18, 2006, 6:44 AM
After lots of thought and many, many nights of reading reviews and looking at sample pics, I finally settled on the camera lens I wanted. I went into the city and picked up a Canon 70-200 F4 L series. I've had the weekend to play with it, and i've been totally blown away with what it can do. By going for telephoto, I can move away from wide angle (landscape) photography, and do more people, animals, and some of the little details that you just can't zero in on with a walk around or wide angle lens. It's going to be pretty good for portrait work too, you can really isolate facial details if you need to. Although hideously expensive, I'm hoping it will last a good few years. So, in summary, lots more portrait and telephoto stuff coming from me in future!

Also, I've hit only a couple of the spots to photograph in my previous post... here's hoping I can do a few more before Uni is back on...

Filter size is directionally proportional to how common your lens diamater is... for example, my new lens is 67mm from edge to edge, which makes them expensive, because that's an uncommon size...

Hoya seem to make really good filters (at least that's what everyone else I've spoken to thinks).
By B&W filters, do you mean filters of various colours that you'd use to alter the final tone of a black and white film image?
If you're shooting with digital, save money and use the channel mixer in photoshop :)
Alas, I'm not studying photography at uni, but I am studying security science... I know, totally unrelated. Photography is a 'serious' hobby for me, as serious as hobbies get, I suppose. What are you studying?

Thanks for the link. Yeah I mean coloured filters that effect the tonality of the photo.
I've been looking at Hoya filters so i'll probably end up with some of those. I've just started photography this year but before that I was doing Commerce but it bored me senseless.
Places you might want to look at in the city that might help are PRA, camera electronics and plaza cameras. I was just being lazy and was hoping you knew of somewhere cheap. :)
Thanx again.
